Spiced Apples with Glaze

Ingredients

  • 6 Rome Beauty apples, peeled, halved and cored
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 cups water
  • 6 thin slices lemon
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 Tbs grated orange rind
  • 1” cinnamon stick
  • 6 maraschino cherries, halved
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • Red food coloring (opt)

Directions

Combine sugar and water in an electric frying pan and bring to a boil. Add lemon, cloves, rind, and cinnamon. Add apples, simmer uncovered over moderate heat 6 minutes each side, cut side down first. Don’t overcook!

Remove apples and lemon. Bring sauce to a rolling boil. Combine cornstarch and water. Add to sauce with food coloring. Put half cherry in each apple core center. Pour sauce over apples on serving tray or plates.

Fabulous side dish with ham.
